Meet the Artist

Mohan Lal Sharma

Mohan Lal Sharma learnt the art of Tarkashi at the age of 14 from his brother and Guru, Shri Gopal Lal Sharma. Since then he has created a lot of work on Rosewood timber (sheesham) and other mediums and has received a National Merit Certificate, State Award and a National Award in 2013. He was also felicitated with the Shilp Guru Award in 2019.

In the early 16th century, Jaipur invited craftsmen from all across the nation to contribute their abilities to its development. Amongst these were the artisans of Tarkashi who migrated from Uttar Pradesh. Tarkashi thus became a part of Jaipur’s culture.

Taar means wire. Tarkashi is inlaying a fine flattened wire of brass/silver or gold in wood. For centuries, Rajasthan’s artisans have created hand-crafted boxes and decorations with intricate geometric patterns, expressing royalty in Rajasthan’s culture. The craft of metal inlay requires great expertise and patience.

This craft is still highly esteemed In the contemporary world. Historically, the artwork was displayed on tables and decorative boxes. These days, the patterns can be seen on other practical products like trays, plates, spice boxes, etc. Another much-appreciated State relic that is ideal for both private and gift-giving purposes is Tarkashi.

Tarkashi work can be seen in the old palaces and mahals of Rajasthan. These palaces have beautifully inlaid doors with ivory and intricate floral or geometric patterns.
